During the train ride, I indulged in a delicious rice tonkatsu burger and fresh peach juice, setting the tone for the culinary delights ahead.
Upon arrival at Oishida Station, the next leg of the adventure involves a local bus ride through picturesque landscapes until reaching Ginzan Onsen. As we travel deeper into the mountains, the transformation from urban Tokyo to this rustic oasis is astonishing. Ginzan Onsen itself, which translates to “Silver Mine Hot Spring,” boasts a rich history dating back over 500 years when miners first discovered its healing waters.
Despite a devastating flood in the Taisho era that wiped out the village, the resilient inhabitants rebuilt it into the enchanting resort it is today. As I walked through the village, surrounded by traditional ryokans and snow-covered scenery, it felt as if I had stepped into another world.
Food is integral to the experience, and I sampled delectable soba noodles paired with excellent tempura, as well as authentic street food, including boiled tofu while soaking my feet in the hot spring’s waters. As night descended, the village transformed into a magical place, illuminated by soft lamps, seemingly alive with the spirit of “Spirited Away.” Although departing required some logistical planning due to limited bus schedules, witnessing this charming village at sunset was unforgettable.
