The West Express Ginga operates on three scenic routes throughout the year, including the Sanin Route that runs from Izumo City to Kyoto. Covering a distance of 440 kilometers, this journey takes approximately 14 hours and 43 minutes, including 12 stops for passengers to stretch, relax, and take in beautiful views along the way.
Upon arrival at Izumoshi station, wecould hardly contain our excitement as we boarded the train. The train’s aesthetic is modern yet cozy, featuring six train cars that house various accommodations. We specifically reserved a premier room located in Car 6, which provides private and secure spaces with options to convert the seating area into a comfortable bed.
With its wood accents and contemporary designs, the room also boasts several modern amenities: a strong air conditioning system, multiple power outlets, and even complimentary WiFi for streaming entertainment. The train’s expressiveness extends to its dining options, where we experienced the famous Ginga Ichibanboshi Bento—an exquisite meal served with stunning views as the backdrop.
Onboard, there is no shortage of shared and private spaces, including lounge areas and cabins designed for families or women only. Throughout the journey, cultural highlights such as sake tasting and additional dining moments like the surprise midnight snack provided an immersive experience into Japan’s culinary delights.
With stops at various splendid locales, from the breathtaking Lake Shinji to bustling cities like Osaka, the West Express Ginga is more than just a train ride; it’s an adventure through some of Japan’s most beautiful landscapes. We bid farewell to the conductor and the staff, grateful for an unforgettable experience. Until our next journey, this ride has certainly set a new benchmark for luxury travel in Japan.
